JAKARTA, Dec 1 (Bernama) -- Malaysia bagged two winner and six merit awards at the Asia Pacific Information and Communications Technology Alliance (APICTA) Awards 2014 ceremony here Sunday night. One winner award entry was 'Gempa-Locate', an android mobile phone application that can assist individuals trapped in collapsed structures in the aftermath of an earthquake.

The award, in the category of research and development, was received by Captain (Rtd) Syed Nasir Alsagoff Syed Zakaria, an associate professor at the National Defence University of Malaysia. The other winner award in the category of industrial application was bagged by Ecava Sdn Bhd. The company featured its flagship product, 'IntegraXor', a web software with two US patents and an application which facilitates users to access web browsers without any additional devices.

Two merit awards in tertiary student projects were won by the Multimedia University and University Tunku Abdul Rahman. Other merit awards in the school project category were bagged by Foon Yew High School from Johor Baharu, Cytron R&D (MSC) Sdn Bhd (in e-learning category), Blinkware Technology (in media and entertainment technology), and Web Bytes Sdn Bhd (in retail and supply chain management). The APICTA 2014 Chief Judge, Richard Kartawijaya said overall, the entries presented were excellent and of world standard.

The APICTA award ceremony this year was a black tie and batik event at the Sahid Jaya Hotel here and attracted 183 nominations from 17 countries in the Asia Pacific. Multimedia Development Corp (MDeC) Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Datuk Yasmin Mahmood said the APICTA had improved over the years. She said the agency was proud of the wins this time and believed Malaysia could actually do better.

"I think we have a lot more companies that are on par with the other (winning) countries. Next year, we will ensure some of them enter the competition. "In terms of quality, the APICTA is getting greater recognition. Since this is the best recognition for ICT in the Asia Pacific, a country like Pakistan brought in their elite teams and scored well. So, we will do likewise next year," she said.

Yasmin said Indonesia had done a good job as host, considering that the venue was switched from Lahore, Pakistan to Jakarta, just recently. MDec Chairman Tan Sri Abdul Halim Ali said he was very happy with Malaysia's success but should aim for more outright wins.

"What MDeC would like to also see is greater collaboration among member countries. While we compete, we must also collaborate," he added.

The APICTA Chairman for 2014-2015 Dr Dileepa De Silva said this year's event saw intense competition among member countries, showcasing innovative products. "Every innovation presented was not only very unique in terms of ideas and display of high-tech features, but also potentially brought a positive impact on the global scale. "The APICTA 2014 succeeded in giving participants a chance to show off their talent and innovative products, while taking ICT to the next level," he said at the awards night. The APICTA 2015 is scheduled to be held in November next year in Colombo, Sri Lanka. - BERNAMA
